Beaches of North Padre Island — The Local Guide
North Padre Island is one continuous beach — over 70 miles of sand running from Bob Hall Pier down to the Mansfield Channel — but a handful of named access points are where almost everyone actually goes. Here's what each one is good for.
Whitecap Beach is the busiest and most amenity-rich: showers, restrooms, lifeguards in season, walking-distance restaurants. Best for first-time visitors and families.
Bob Hall Pier is the next access south — same beach, big fishing pier, more parking. Good for surf fishing and watching pelicans.
Padre Balli Park sits between them. County park, $12 day-use fee, paved parking, restrooms. Quieter than Whitecap.
Mustang Island State Park is north (across the Packery Channel). $5 day-use, primitive beach, drive-on access. Best for getting away from people.
Malaquite Beach is part of the Padre Island National Seashore, way south. No vehicles on the beach in this section, lifeguards in summer, the most natural setting on the island.
Surfing: Whitecap is the most consistent spot. Bob Hall is the next-best when it's working. Local shops will rent boards and wetsuits in winter.

Can I drive on the beach?
Most of North Padre and Mustang Island allows beach driving with a $12 annual parking sticker (or daily pass at Bob Hall/Padre Balli). The Padre Island National Seashore allows driving on the beach south of the Malaquite visitor center but not in the protected swimming area.
Is the water clear?
It depends on wind. South wind = clearer water. North wind after a front = murky. Spring and fall typically have the clearest conditions.
Are there jellyfish?
Occasionally in summer — mostly small moon jellies that don't sting much. Portuguese man-o-war wash up after south wind. Shuffle your feet for stingrays.
